Just How Saturated is the Voip Marketplace?

By Saul Saresi

Voice Over Internet Protocol has quickly risen above all competition to become the undisputed king in waiting of communication for both the business and residential world's alike, effortlessly mixing incredible audio quality and video transfer capabilities with unbelievable flexibility.

But because of the incredible advantages offered by Voice Over IP technologies, and the drastic uptake in people wanting to utilise Voip technologies, market saturation is a serious problem which service providers are taking very significant steps to research.

The statistics are alarming. In 2010 Voice Over IP subscriber numbers reached nearly one hundred and sixty million, showing an increase of almost 13%, followed up by the number of residential customers reaching over one hundred and seventy five million in 2011 - an increase of over 14%.

In the league table of most active-user countries the USA Japan and France hold the top three positions, with the UK (unsurprisingly) wallowing in tenth place, largely due, you would think, to the inadequate nature of UK broadband coverage by comparison.

In France and Japan, the introduction of fibre based broadband services have been the main driver behind adoption, with over 93% of broadband subscribers in France also having a Voice Over IP service, a statistic which has resulted in that particular segment to suffer from market saturation.

But regardless of when if and even why market saturation should ever occur, there are still many untapped markets just waiting to jump on the Voice Over IP bandwagon, and none-more-so than China, where in 2010 figures show just one bundled Voip package for every twenty subscription.

And as is that wasn't enough of a re-assurance for all those Voice Over IP service providers out there, they can take even more heart from the fact that the ever increasing number of Smartphones on the market (a number which is not going to decrease anytime soon) will continue to attract Voip customers in their millions.

But regardless of whether market saturation is reached in even the top 5 Voip using countries in the coming years, it will still be many many more before there is any risk of worldwide saturation. And in the mean time, the advantages offered by Voip services and technologies will only continue to increase and entice ever more people in.
